What is a Pedal Assistant System (PAS)?

pas-explained

If you’ve been browsing electric hunting bikes – you might notice something called PAS. PAS is a pedal assistant system that can be found in eBikes, especially hunting eBikes.

But how does this system work, why is it useful, how can you benefit from it – and is it really something that you need on your eBike?

Also, one of the most asked questions is if pedal assistance system better than throttle control?

These are just some of the questions we will be answering in this post, so keep on reading!

What is a PAS – Pedal Assistant System?

PAS – pedal assistant system is best described as an operating mode that helps turn on the eBike motor to help you pedal.

If you have ever tried pedaling an eBike with a PAS system – you would remember noticing a boost of power coming from one of the wheels.

It will depend on the type of motor your eBike has – but most of the time, a boost of the power will come from the rear wheel.

But why do eBikes come equipped with PAS, especially hunting eBikes?

eBikes need an operating mode that allows users to activate the motor. Without such operating mode, the motor wouldn’t be able to hibernate and save energy when the eBike is stationary.

Also, when you reach a high speed or you’re riding downhill, whenever you don’t put pressure on the pedals (or don’t even pedal), the motor will use less power – providing a better battery life which results in a better range.

How Pedal Assistant System Works?

pas-explained

The pedal assistant system comes with a couple of different levels. As you increase the level, the eBike will be easier to ride.

However, if you decrease the PAS level, you will have to put more effort into riding the eBike – but you will end up saving a lot more battery. This will directly result in a better range.

Therefore, if you’re riding on a flat surface – you can set PAS to a level that you feel comfortable with. This means that you using the pedals shouldn’t wear you out and yet you’d be traveling at a decent speed.

If you are riding uphill, it makes sense to increase the PAS level to make the eBike easier to ride – allowing the motor to help you out in the hills.

And when you’re riding downhill, it makes the most sense to set the PAS level to a minimum as you will be able to use most of your energy without getting tired.

Benefits of PAS

There are a couple of different operating ways that can be used instead of PAS – but PAS provides really great benefits which is one of the main reasons why it’s still used nowadays.

Pedal Assistant System is very easy to use, it’s very simple to install on eBikes and maintaining is effortless as well.

Customizable grip position helps riders individually find the right position that will help them change PAS levels on the go.

Safety and versatility are two other great benefits.

We believe that it’s a lot easier to be able to just jump onto the eBike and start pedaling (and have the motor activated immediately), rather than having to activate the motor manually using a thumb throttle.

PAS allows easier take-offs and less effort to ride the eBike without sacrificing the range you have left. As the motor provides power only when you’re pedaling – you can also save a lot more power (depending on the locations you ride).

PAS VS Throttle Control

As you already know, other than PAS – pedal assistant system, there are a couple of other systems that do the same job and yet have different advantages & disadvantages.

You could learn about the benefits of PAS in the previous chapter – so below, you’ll learn about the second-most popular operating system known as throttle control (or thumb throttle).

Throttle control operates in the similar way a scooter operates. As soon as you engage the throttle, the motor provides power and increases your speed.

With throttle control, you don’t even have to use pedals if you don’t want to. However, one downside is that not all throttle controls offer you to choose the throttle power.

While on the other hand, every PAS offers levels that help you adjust the output power.

Other than PAS being more natural, you can rest assured knowing that you’ll always be able to adjust the output power.

However, throttle control isn’t a bad idea either if you can find an eBike that allows you to dial the throttle power.

What’s Better for Hunting?

When it comes down to hunting, we prefer PAS – pedal assistant system.

Why?

The main reason is that you won’t have to worry about activating the motor as it will always get activated once you start pedaling.

You will also have two free hands which won’t distract you from maneuvering the eBike. This might not be very important for people who ride on the flat surface – but if you’re tackling rough terrains while you haul your hunting gear – this is something to consider!

However, we know that there are hunters that would like to have their thumb over the throttle control (especially the one that outputs full power from the motor).

There is no right or wrong choice but it’s a decision you will have to consider before investing in a hunting eBike!

Conclusion

Any operating system has advantages and disadvantages – but one thing is for sure. All of them help the motor idle and save battery/range.

Even though there is no right or wrong operating system – it’s all about your personal preference.

Most hunting eBikes come equipped with a PAS system which is easy to maintain and very easy to use. But you can also find hunting eBikes with thumb throttle control – which is as good.

Hopefully, now you understand the PAS – pedal assistant system and you won’t ever have to think twice when you spot it while you browse hunting eBikes!
